Celebrities and boxers competed in a football match at Hallam FC last Sunday, to help fundraise for three Sheffield charities.

The match, compèred by Big Brother contestant Simon Gross, saw many goals but the celebrities secured victory, with a final score of 9-7.

Among the professional boxers and TV stars, who entertained the Sandygate crowd were: Thomas Turgoose of This is England fame, Eastenders’ Devon Anderson, and former European Champion Boxer Ryan Rhodes along with many others.

Despite the cold and rain, around a thousand people attended the event, helping to raise £3000 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the Changing Lives Foundation.

Stephen Nicholas, whose involvement with similar events inspired the idea, said: “The weather wasn’t great, it was quite cold, but I was happy with the turn out.

“We just wanted people to have a good time and the charities to get extra money.

“Each of the three charities raised £1000, so £3000 altogether. We have helped in a way, but I know we could have done better, for example if we have been selling raffle tickets from the beginning.”

The day was a great success both in terms of raising awareness and funds for all three charities.

Following the impressive turn out, the organisers will be planning a similar, larger scale event in the city next year.
